CARLISLE, Pa. - There's a national mission to raise suicide awareness, and people in our area are taking on the call.  Hundreds of people came out for the first Out of the Darkness Community Walk in Carlisle, Cumberland County. They're showing support for those who suffer from mental health conditions and to honor loved ones who have taken their own lives.

Tricia Carbaugh says the event holds a very special meaning to her and her family, and she was able to make it all happen with help from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and local volunteers.

"My family and I attended the Harrisburg walk  last year because we lost my nephew to suicide last February," Carbaugh said, "and we decided we wanted to start one here in Carlisle. We contacted the AFSP and Brandon Marsico, and he helped us get started, so here we are."

Luminaries lined the walking path which organizers say helps to light up the darkness that surrounds the stigma that comes with suicide. Participants also dawned bead necklaces around their necks-- each color representing their personal connection to the cause.

The money raised at this event will help fund research and programs for the AFSP.
