GETTYSBURG, Pa.- The borough of Gettysburg is launching an outside investigation of the police department's use of force, after a police body camera showed an officer Tasering a man sitting in his car during a police traffic stop.
Officer Christopher Folster was trying to arrest 28-year-old Derek Twyman during the May traffic stop for violating a protection from abuse order. Twyman refused to get out of his car and Folster tasers him several times.
A jury found Twyman not guilty of resisting arrest based on the video.
On Thursday, the mayor and borough council came to a consensus that they will launch an independent review of the police department's use of force policies. That includes the video and the actions of Officer Folster.
"Any investigation that is going to be conducted is going to be done comprehensively, to look at the best use of force, and to make sure that we are following proper procedures with escalation of force," says borough manager Charles Gable.
Gable says the borough will release a statement soon with the agency conducting the review.
The department will also be receiving more body cameras, and some residents say it's a good thing.
"If they had a body camera on, I feel like instead of just word for word, they'd have a little bit of evidence to go off of, to figure it out," says Jessica Golliday of Gettysburg.
