HARRISBURG, Pa. – PennDOT says starting Friday night, at 9 pm  and continuing through the weekend its contractor will install steel beams and false-work in order to repair a bridge pier that supports the eastbound U.S. 322 spans within the Eisenhower Interchange just east of  Harrisburg in Swatara Township.

Motorists are advised that the northbound Interstate 283 ramp at Exit 3-A for southbound Interstate 83 under U.S. 322 East will be closed from 9 pm Friday,  until 5 am on Monday, December 7. Until work is complete, traffic will be detoured from I-283 North to Exit 3-B for I-83 North, to Exit 48 for Union Deposit Road, to I-83 South.

Motorists are asked to be alert to this operation and to drive carefully through the detour route.

To avoid delays, travelers should allow for additional time in their plans or seek an alternate route.

This construction work is part of a nearly $5.6-million repair contract with Deblin, Inc. of Mechanicsburg, that began in late June to address 30 bridges on or connecting to I-83 in the Harrisburg area, including the John Harris Memorial Bridge (also known as the South Bridge), the Eisenhower Interchange (including I-283 and U.S. 322), and bridges on the mainline between the South Bridge and Eisenhower Interchange as well as some of the ramps associated with the interchanges.

The contract also includes the bridge that carries Derry Street over U.S. 322 and bridges that are part of the Penhar interchange with U.S. 322 in Swatara Township. The type of repairs are classified as “bridge preservation” and include items such as bridge joint repairs, deck repairs, and repairs to the bearings – all intended to help extend the service life of each bridge structure.

When the contractor finishes repairs to bridges in the Eisenhower Interchange and its vicinity, the final work will focus on the John Harris Memorial Bridge.

The overall project is scheduled to be completed in the spring 2016.
