YORK COUNTY, Pa. – Dog owners can now purchase their 2016 dog licenses at their local county treasurer’s office. State law requires all dogs, ages three months of age and older, to be licensed by January 1 each year.

An annual dog license is $8.50 or $6.50 if the animal is spayed or neutered. Lifetime licenses are also available at $31.50 or $51.50 for dogs that have permanent identification such as a microchip or tattoo. Older adults and persons with disabilities may purchase a license at a discounted rate.

The license application collects information such as the owner’s contact information and details about the dog being licensed, such as the pet’s name, age, breed and color. The information is used by the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Dog Law, local police and shelters to identify lost dogs and get them home safely.

County officials stress the importance of licensing your dog:
•It’s the law. All dogs, three months of age and older, must have a current license.
•If your dog gets lost, a license is the best way to get him back. A license helps identify your dog and return him safely to you.
•The cost of a license is less than the penalty for being caught without one. Owners who fail to license their dogs could face a fine of up to $300 for each unlicensed dog.
•License fees support animal control through the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement, which is responsible for ensuring the welfare of dogs, regulating dangerous dogs and overseeing annual licensing and rabies vaccinations.

Dog owners may also purchase the licenses online, by mail or in person at your county’s Treasurer’s Office. If you dog has lost its lifetime license tag, the Treasurer’s office can issue a replacement tag for your dog.

Please notify the Treasurer’s office if you have a change in your contact information.
