MANCHESTER TWP., York, Pa. -- A 10-inch high pressure gas line was struck by a contractor, causing a leak and home evacuations. The homes being evacuated are on the 2700 block of Woodmont Drive in Manchester Township. There are no reports of injuries. Columbia gas and Met Ed are on the scene as well as emergency personnel.
While digging for a new gas line, the contractor hit the current line. Gas could be smelled a quarter mile away. Crews reported the ground shook when they arrived.
The Central York School District is asking parents of students affected by the road closures to pick up students at their schools.
Central York School District has issued the following message for students who live near the affected area:
"Please be advised that York County 911 is evacuating homes near Woodmont Drive due to a fire and ruptured gas line on that street. They have notified us that our buses which normally transport students to homes in that area will not be permitted through. If you are a parent/guardian of a student who lives on one of the following streets in that area, our buses will not be able to transport your child home this afternoon. You will need to pick your child up at school at dismissal.
The roads affected are: Harvest, Hearthridge, Woodmont and Robin Hill.
Again, if you are the parent/guardian of a student who lives on Harvest, Hearthridge, Woodmont or Robin Hill, you will need to pick up your child at their school at dismissal today, as our buses will not be able to reach those areas to drop off students after school
**If your child normally is transported to a day care or child care facility after school, he/she will still be transported to that location as normal.**"
