YORK, PA -- Video of a dog being abused in York City over the weekend has gone viral.

Police say in the video 28-year-old Luis Junior Cruz-Padro is punching and then whipping a year and a half old dog named Bugs.

An animal cruelty charge has been filed against the man.

Bugs is doing well, and staying at the York County SPCA. He underwent surgery on Tuesday and is recovering.

Workers are still trying to get to know Bugs, but say he's a pretty quiet guy.  He doesn't really like quick movements and sometimes reacts to men.  Physically he is doing well after being abused.  His surgery let the veterinarian see how the beating impacted him internally.

Melissa Smith, the Executive Director of the York County SPCA, says he does have one broken rib.  He was also shaved on his one side to locate bruising, but the hair will grow back.

Bugs will go into a foster home so they can get to know him better before placing him in a permanent home. Others have asked to adopt Bugs. The YCSPCA says his story has brought in so much attention they are hoping people will come in to see more dogs. About 100 are currently available at the shelter.

Smith says, "Bugs is only one dog, so he can only take up one home. So you know there's a lot of other people that were inquiring, so maybe we hope that they would be inspired to come here and you know fall in love with another dog."

Willa, the puppy who came in with Bugs, will likely go to her forever home this weekend.

Anyone with information on Cruz-Padro’s whereabouts is asked to call the York County SPCA at 717-764-6109 or the York County Detective Bureau at 717-771-9600.
