Dallas, TX — It was a fight over a simple cell phone, but it brought one Texas dad to court.

Ronald Jackson was put in handcuffs and brought to jail at two in the morning, all over his daughter’s cell phone.

Jackson told KTVT, “I couldn’t believe they could go to this extent for a cell phone. It didn’t seem right.”

Jackson says he found a text on his daughter’s phone that he found “rude” regarding another woman, so he took the phone from the girl, who was 12 at the time.

He says, “I was being a parent. You know, a child does something wrong, you teach them what’s right.”

But when Jackson’s ex-wife, the current spouse of a police officer, found out about what happened, she called the cops.

Jackson told KTVT, “I didn’t want the police department telling me how to parent my child. It made no sense to me for them to show up and make a big deal out of something that was a small thing.”

Jackson was given the opportunity to hand over the phone, according to police, but he refused.

Jackson was brought to jail, but released after posting $1,500 bail.

The original incident happened in 2013, and a year and a half later a warrant was issued for Jackson for misdemeanor theft.

In the end, a Dallas County Judge had the final say on Tuesday.  She ruled there was not enough evidence to prove theft had occurred and found Jackson not guilty.

Jackson’s ex-wife said the phone was not his property to take, but the judge ruled he could keep the confiscated phone.
