HARRISBURG, Pa. - Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, and W.E.B. Du Bois are just a few of the African-American icons who have written their way into American history. In Harrisburg, there may be a few writers in the making. A Black History month event is inspiring children to be just like those great writers through literature.
The Epsilon Sigma Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated hosted an African-American Read-In at Scott Elementary School in Harrisburg. The national event is in its 27th year, and it brings the community together to focus on the literary works of professional black writers.
"It's wonderful to see this tradition being passed onto children who wrote their own songs, who wrote their own poems, who wrote their own books and are now sharing that joy of literature with others," Sorority member and Read-In Chairman, Karen Love said.
