HARRISBURG, PA — In an announcement made to the Commonwealth via email, Governor Tom Wolf endorsed Josh Shapiro for Attorney General of Pennsylvania on Sunday.

“Josh Shapiro is a proven reformer who will restore integrity to Harrisburg,” Gov. Wolf said. “Josh is the best choice to be our next Attorney General. I look forward to doing everything I can to help him win this election.”

“From passing the strongest ethics reform in generations while serving in the legislature to cleaning up a fiscal and ethical mess as an executive, Josh Shapiro is a candidate of integrity who has proven his ability to lead,” Wolf said.

Shapiro, 42, has been Chairman of the County Commissioners and has worked to reform Montgomery County’s government by turning record deficits into consecutive budget surpluses while simultaneously making investments in infrastructure, human services and public safety. Montgomery County also became one of the first counties in America to strengthen its pension fund by cutting-out the Wall Street middle-men who charge large fees.

Shapiro’s administration is also known for leading the fight against former Gov. Tom Corbett’s discriminatory Voter ID plan and issues the first marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples in Pennsylvania.

Shapiro has also served in state legislature, and currently serves as the Chairman of the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, where he has made it a point to bring common sense reforms to our criminal justice system and to protect victims of crime.

“Josh Shapiro will be an Attorney General who stands up for progressive Democratic values,” Wolf continued. “As Chairman of Pennsylvania’s third-largest county he protected seniors, consumers, and the environment. Josh has fought discrimination, from Republican attempts to implement a Voter ID law that would have disenfranchised tens of thousands of Pennsylvanians to when he helped lead the fight for marriage equality in Pennsylvania. And he’s taken on the Wall Street money managers in order to protect taxpayers.”

“I’m proud to have the endorsement of Gov. Tom Wolf,” Shapiro said. “We should all be proud of his determination to stand up to Republicans in Harrisburg in defense of our values and to get Pennsylvania back on track. I look forward to working alongside Gov. Wolf in our joint effort to restore integrity to Harrisburg.”

The Democratic primary is being held on Tuesday, April 26.
