Part of federal anti-terrorism initiatives, the Real ID Act of 2005 requires states to enforce strict license and ID standards. Before you board a plane, the government thinks you should display a Real ID-verified form of identification. However, Pennsylvania is among 29 states who are not fully compliant with this law.
Pennsylvania is currently operating under an extension, meaning the state has until October 2016 to have driver's licenses be made compliant with Real ID standards. However, a 2011 PA law sponsored by Senator Mike Folmer essentially prohibits Pennsylvania from participating in the Real ID program.
