SUSQUEHANNA TOWNSHIP, Pa. - People with a sweet tooth made their way to Fort Hunter Park in Dauphin County on Sunday. The County Parks and Recreation Department hosted its annual Maple Sugar Festival in Susquehanna Township.
The free event shows people how syrup is made, and attendees get to try drilling holes into maple trees with old-fashioned tools.
"We started tapping trees here at Fort Hunter Park two weeks ago," Assistant Program Director, Michelle Hornberger said, "We've tapped six different trees, we got between 40 and 50 gallons of actual sap, and then we take the sap and put it in a cast iron kettle and boil it down it takes 40 gallons of sap just to make one gallon of maple syrup."
Maple syrup-centered activities took place throughout the afternoon-- including taste-testing.
