MOUNT JOY, Pa.–A Mount Joy mother is facing charges after police said her 4-year-old daughter was hospitalized from ingesting her methadone.

Sarah Germain, 30, is charged with aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of children.  She was arraigned Feb. 18 and taken to Lancaster County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bail.

The charges stem from an incident that occurred on Jan. 20. Officers responded to the the first block of North Jacob Street for an unresponsive 4-year-old girl.  When emergency crews arrived–Germain’s daughter was laying on the ground in the living room, breathing very shallow with a weak pulse.

Initially, Germain told investigators she was not aware of what caused her daughter’s condition, according to the criminal complaint.

EMS had to give the little girl multiple doses of Narcan in order to revive her, court document state. The girl was taken to Lancaster General Hospital where Germain confessed that her daughter had ingested some of her prescribed methadone the night before, according to court documents.

Police said that while at the hospital Germain kept changing the amount of methadone her child ingested. Germain admitted she should have told emergency responders everything immediately, but that she was scared, court documents state. Germain said she did not want to get in trouble with Children and Youth.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 1.
