MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- An Alabama lawmaker has proposed a bill that would force certain sex offenders to be surgically castrated before they leave prison, according to
WHNT
.

Representative Steve Hurst wants offenders convicted of sexual offenses against children 12 and under to be physically punished saying, "They have marked this child for life and the punishment should fit the crime."

Hurst has introduced the bill in the past and says people have called it "inhuman," to which he replied, "What's more inhuman when you take a little infant child and you sexually molest that infant child when the child cannot defend themselves or get away and they have to go through all the things they have to go through."

Hurst is hoping the punishment would be a deterrent for potential sex offenders.

The bill would have to pass the judiciary committee before it's heard by the Alabama House and Senate.
