HARRISBURG, Pa. – PennDOT maintenance crews closed the Social Island Road Bridge over the Conococheague Creek in Hamilton Township, Franklin County, to all traffic on Friday night, March 18, after two vehicles collided and damaged the bridge. Social Island Road is officially designated as State Route 3012. The bridge carries roughly 2,430 vehicles over it on a daily basis. Traffic is now detoured by way of Route 11, Kauffman Road (State Route 2016), Guitner Road (SR 3015), and Route 995.

As a result of the vehicular head-on collision on Friday, both vehicles struck one of the stone masonry parapets (i.e., bridge walls), which cracked and pushed some of the wall into the Conococheague Creek below. The historic stone masonry arch bridge that dates from 1860 was examined on Saturday for a more thorough damage assessment. The bridge will remain closed for several weeks until repairs can be made. Due to the historic designation of the bridge, some coordination with the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) may be necessary.
