HARRISBURG, Pa.–  A construction project to make repairs to the Route 238 bridge over Interstate 83 in Manchester Township, York County, will require three weekend closures of the bridge in April. Route 238 is known locally as Church Road. The bridge forms part of the I-83 Exit 24 interchange for Emigsville and carries nearly 19,000 vehicles over the interstate on a daily basis.

The first weekend closure is scheduled for Friday, April 1, starting at 9 PM and continuing no later than 6 AM on Monday, April 4. The ramps at the interchange will remain open for motorists entering and leaving I-83. Eastbound motorists on Route 238 will be detoured by way of southbound I-83 to Exit 22 (Route 181/North George Street), and then back on northbound I-83 to eastbound Route 238 at Exit 24. Westbound traffic on Route 283 will be detoured by way of northbound I-83 to Exit 28 (Route 295/Strinestown) and then back south on I-83 to westbound Route 238 at Exit 24.

Weekend closures are also scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, April 9-10 and April 16-17, starting very early on Saturday mornings (around 3 AM) and finishing up on Sunday evenings. Though the bridge can remain closed until 6 AM on Monday, the contractor’s goal is to reopen the bridge earlier, ideally by Sunday evening. If adverse weather or other circumstances – such as equipment breakdowns — prevent the contractor from working on any of these weekends, the contractor may use April 23-24 as a make-up weekend to complete the work.

PennDOT has contracted with J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, Pennsylvania, to conduct the bridge repair work at a cost of $570,055. The project includes the replacement of compression seals, minor substructure and superstructure repairs, deck repairs, and a bituminous overlay. The project is scheduled to wrap up by the end of April.
