Harrisburg, PA-– Nighttime prep work begins on Monday, April 4, for a construction project to replace the superstructure of the bridge that carries Route 934 over the Norfolk Southern Railway in Annville, Lebanon County.
This portion of Route 934 is known locally as North White Oak Street. The bridge is located north of Route 422 in the borough, between Sheridan Avenue and Heisey Drive. Motorists are advised that traffic may be reduced to a single lane with flaggers assisting them through the work area during the overnight hours between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. over the next two to three weeks. Drivers are asked to be alert to this operation and to slow down when approaching and traveling through the work zone, for their safety as well as for the safety of the construction crews.
The prep work involves some modifications on the roadway approaches to the bridge as well as the installation of a temporary traffic signal. When the prep work is completed later this month, staged construction will begin on the replacement of the bridge superstructure. Staged construction means that one-half of the bridge will be demolished and rebuilt while the other side of the bridge remains open to carry traffic. In the next stage, traffic will be shifted onto the newly constructed side of the bridge while the other half is demolished and rebuilt. Traffic during both stages will be limited to a single lane, with traffic signals controlling the direction of single-lane traffic through the construction work zone and over the bridge. During the course of project, it will be necessary to close the bridge completely to traffic over a weekend and detour traffic. PennDOT will announce the weekend closure when the dates have been determined.
PennDOT has contracted with J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, Pennsylvania, to conduct the bridge superstructure replacement project at a cost of $2,949,870.
Nearly 8,900 vehicles cross this bridge on a daily basis. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of April 2017.
