YORK, Pa. - Grab your rod and reel because the regional trout fishing season is here. Saturday was the opening day for fisherman and women in our area.

The York City Recreation and Parks hosted the 17th annual William Shaffer Trout Fishing Derby at Kiwanis Lake. The derby is for kids only and is free. Dozens of future fishers threw in their lines.

"It's just really exciting when you get to pull up a fish and go measure it and see what happens," derby participant Rachel Wertz said, "and I like releasing things back I don't really bring them home. So I got to put that back in the lake for somebody to maybe catch someday."

Those who caught the biggest trout got a trophy.
