HARRISBURG, Pa.– Harrisburg’s new Demolition Team began taking down the first of a dozen buildings on Tuesday as part of a project to tackle neighborhood blight.

Demolition began on two houses at 1415 and 1416 Swatara St. as the first in a series of scheduled demolitions over the next few months, according to Mayor Eric Papenfuse.

“Our new 3-man demolition team is already at work improving out City,” Mayor Papenfuse said. “With the infusion of new hires, we now have the capacity we need to start taking down blighted and unsafe buildings.”

Over the next few days, workers will continue removing debris from the Swatara Street demolition site.  Once the demolition is completed, the crew will proceed to taking down the next targeted properties.

Initial properties slated for demolition include:

  • 1727 Regina St.
  • 1729 Regina St.
  • 1731 Regina St.
  • 1717 Regina  St.
  • 1921 Logan St.
  • 1923 Logan
  • 2620 N. 6th
  • 2622 N. 6th

FOX43’s Kara Duffy went to the scene for an inside look at the demolition project.
