Man charged in shooting, robbery at Shrewsbury Walmart

SHREWSBURY, Pa.–A York man is now facing charges after authorities say he attempted to shoot a Pennsylvania State Police trooper during a robbery at the Walmart in Shrewsbury on Thursday night.

Thomas A. Markowski, 57,  is charged with criminal attempted homicide of a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault, robbery, theft by unlawful taking, possession of instruments of a crime, prohibited offensive weapon and recklessly endangering another person.

The incident unfolded shortly after 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Walmart located along the 600 block of Shrewsbury Commons Avenue. Investigators say Markowski robbed the pharmacy at gunpoint and was trying to flee when he was stopped by a responding state trooper in the entrance way of the store. The trooper ordered Markowski to drop his weapon, but he refused and pointed his shotgun at the officer, according to Trooper Robert Hicks, a state police spokesman.

The trooper, who has not been identified, was able to push the barrel away. Markowski was able to fire off one round and, simultaneously, the trooper shot his gun, hitting Markowski in the chest, Hicks said.

Markowski was taken to York Hospital for treatment where his condition is not known at this time.

The trooper was not hurt.

The Shrewsbury Walmart will be closed until 9 a.m. on Saturday.
