HARRISBURG, Pa.--More than 250 teens braved the cold temperatures and rolled up their sleeves to improve the community.

It's part of this year's annual United Way Day of Caring. Students helped prepare the park on City Island in Harrisburg for the spring season by weeding, mulching and picking up trash.

President and CEO of the United Way of the Capital Region, Tim Fatzinger says, "It's an opportunity for them to give back to the community and see how we can make a difference in the area and hopefully encourage them in the future to continue to volunteer in other efforts too."

Students from 10 local high schools attended the event.

Cita Chacor from Commonwealth Connections Academy says, "I think it's very important. I think stuff like this should happen more often ... You don't have to be organized. You can just get some friends and go clean anywhere up, any park, any place."

This is the 14th year the United Way has held the Day of Caring.
