Social media is quickly becoming the norm when it comes to communication. One app that is taking over… Snapchat. Most people think it is used by kids. That may have been the case when the app was first introduced back in 2011… But now, people of all ages are jumping on board this new way to communicate.
The app exploding in the social media world, making its mark among thousands of selfie-snappers.
Jordan Salafia is a 14-year-old from Westminster, Maryland… Who, like many teenagers, uses the app as one of her main forms of communication.
Jordan says she snap chats at least 95 people a day. So, that would break down to about one thousand snaps sent.
"I usually always snap chat them day and night…" Jordan says.
Day and night, the pic is taken, sent, and viewed… and then disappears, if you are sending a snap from person to person. But if you add snaps to your story, it lives on for 24 hours. The app also removes the "I need to post the perfect photo" stigma, and allows people to spontaneously post, in real time. But, that perfect photo is still out there, even in the Snapchat world…
Jordan says, "you have to hold down your face and then a selection will come up below, and you can just scroll through and pick the ones you want."
Jordan uses Snapchat a little more stereotypically. However local business owners, TJ Mousetis and his wife Brooke, use Snapchat to help grow their business, a t-shirt company called "Walk in Love."
TJ says, "It has really opened a lot of opportunity for us to engage with our current customer in a better way. People think Walk in Love is some huge company with hundreds of employees, and it's just Brooke and I and we have one other employee, that's it."
So instead of looking at Snapchat as a trendy social media app, the couple seized the opportunity to reach out to the audience using it.
For TJ and Brooke, t-shirts are life. Their life, now broadcast across Snapchat, 10 seconds at a time.
TJ says now anytime they start to do something more interesting, he will try to download those snaps and upload them to Facebook or his website as mini episodes, which become content that can continue on.
It is because of that personal connection, and the opportunity to choose who to engage with and how often, that Snapchat has surpassed other apps like Instagram and Twitter in popularity. TJ says they prefer Snapchat because the engagement they are getting on Snapchat is better, and deeper than the other apps.
While the apps usage will vary person to person, TJ has some words of wisdom for all of the surface-level-snappers, "High schoolers--stop using it for just the minimum, and really start to maximize what it could be."
TJ and Brooke say they would like to see their local news station on the app.
