COLUMBIA, Pa. – A Columbia Borough Police Officer is forced to shoot at attacking dog. The incident began at about 10 o’clock Thursday morning when police received a call about two aggressive dog running loose in the 100 block of South 5th Street.
The caller told the dispatcher that he had attempted to get out of his vehicle several times but the dogs “chased” him back.
A Borough Officer arrived on scene and as he walked towards the caller’s vehicle the dogs ran towards him as he approached. When the Officer attempted to retreat, the dogs chased after him.
As the dogs closed in, the Officer pulled his service weapon and fired at the first dog as it was lunging at him. Both dogs stopped and retreated.
The uninjured dog returned a short time later and started to approach the Officer again. The dog then ran into a break in a fence a few yards down. Several other Officers arrived and began to search the area. Police eventually located the owner of the dog.
The injured dog was found in the 100 block of South 3rd Street on a porch. It had suffered multiple gun shot wounds. The canine was taken to a local veterinarian by its owner but did not survive.
The Columbia Police Department is investigating whether the owner was in violation of any Pennsylvania Dog Law.
