ENOLA, Pa — East Pennsboro Police say an Enola man struck a 4 year-old child with a cane. Police were called to the first block of East Manor Avenue around 5:15pm on Friday, April 22nd for a report of child abuse.

Police say that Harry Tavernia JR, 38,  threw a cane and struck the child in the back causing injuries to the child. A counselor who provides service to the child witnessed him drinking prior to the child being struck with the aluminum came. When the child screamed, the counselor saw the cane, used by Tavernia, on the ground next to the child. The child said Tavernia threw the cane which struck the child in the back, leaving a red mark.

In court documents, police at the scene say they detected a strong odor of alcohol and that Tavernia appeared lethargic and had slurred speech.

Tavernia is charged with Simple Assault and Harrassment.
