Lower Paxton Twp., Dauphin County, Pa. —  As many of you are probably aware, PennDOT is taking steps to replace bridges and add traffic lanes on Interstate 83 through Lower Paxton Township in an effort to relieve congestion and facilitate smoother traffic flow.  There are multiple phases to this project over several years from 2016-2020.

Beginning in late May 2016, work will begin in the areas around the Union Deposit Rd. interchange and the Jonestown Rd. interchange.  This work will be to reroute exit/entrance ramps and prepare for the replacement of the bridges over I-83.

Also in late May 2016, Elmerton Ave. will be closed in the area of the bridge over I-83, as well as the approaches to that area.  This is necessary to replace the bridge and a detour will be posted and in place.  The work on Elmerton Ave. is expected to be completed before the 2016 holiday season beginning around Thanksgiving.

An approximate timeline for portions of the project also include the replacement of the Union Deposit Rd. bridge in 2017, the replacement of the Jonestown Rd. bridge in 2018 and the actual widening of the interstate which is slated to begin in late 2018 and last until 2020.  As work progresses, additional impacted areas are Londonderry Rd. in the area of the I-83 overpass; Megoulas Blvd. at the I-83 overpass; Locust Ln. at the I-83 overpass; and Valley Rd. at the I-83 overpass.  There will be work done at each of these locations in preparation for the actual widening of I-83.  Traffic will be impacted at all of these locations with traffic direction and control, and occasional short term closures designed to create the least inconvenience.

For our residents and all motorists, please be patient.  This is a lengthy project that will result in a far more safe and efficient flow of traffic through the Township on I-83 when it is completed.  Until then, there will be traffic delays and inconvenience, which will be severe at times.  Once construction starts, please allow for extra time to travel through these areas.  The Lower Paxton Township Police Department would like to thank drivers in advance for their patience and consideration during this trying time.
