York, PA – During the month of May, rabbittransit will recognize Older Americans Month to highlight public transportation opportunities available to seniors within our community.  Each year, rabbittransit provides over 250,000 rides to seniors throughout Adams, Columbia, Cumberland, Franklin, Northumberland, and York Counties.

Beginning May 2, a month-long campaign was launched that focuses on services available to seniors communicated through the website, vehicle flyers and Facebook posts. Those messages will include information about free travel training for those unfamiliar with public transportation, the opportunity that seniors aged 65+ can ride fixed route buses for free in participating counties and more information about the door-to-door Senior Shared Paratransit Program.

Additionally, a 10-minute Vimeo video, titled “Junk Mail,” will be shared halfway through the month. The documentary showcases the story of Mary, a 98-year old woman who utilizes the bus every day to get to the senior center. When Mary is not at the senior center, she sits at home ripping junk mail into small pieces until she awaits the bus to come and take her back to the senior center. She emphasizes the importance that public transportation plays in her life and her ability to connect with the outside world.

rabbittransit’s Mobility Planning Department provides support services to seniors.  They offer outreach presentations to groups and individualized travel training to ensure seniors fully understand the services available and feel comfortable accessing them.

As part of a larger initiative, rabbittransit submitted an application for an Inclusive Planning Impact Grant – Transit Planning4All. The goal of the project is to demonstrate how inclusive community planning can empower older adults and people with disabilities to be actively involved in designing and implementing public transportation systems. rabbittransit continues to hold meetings with the Core Planning Team.
