Dog wardens, in May, plan to canvass homes throughout Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster and Perry counties, according to Dauphin County. They are reaching out to area residents to ensure all dog owners have up-to-date licenses and current rabies vaccinations for their dogs.

Pennsylvania Law requires all dogs three months or older to be licensed each calendar year. Violators are subject to a minimum fine of $300 per violation, plus court costs.

The license fee is $6.50 for a spayed or neutered dog, and $8.50 for other dogs. Older adults and persons with disabilities pay a lesser fee of $4.50 for spayed or neutered dogs and $6.50 for others.

All dogs and non-feral cats also must be vaccinated against rabies. Booster vaccinations must be administered periodically to maintain lifelong immunity. The state department of agriculture recommends the best way to find a lost pet is to have them licensed.

Licenses may be purchased through the Dauphin County Treasurer’s Office or its authorized agents. Information and instructions are available on the county’s website at http://www.DauphinCounty.org.
