YORK, Pa. – A York County deputy sheriff is formally charged with stealing hundreds of dollars from the department’s evidence room.
Sergeant Troy Senft, 58, was arrested and charged by the York County District Attorney’s Office late Friday afternoon before District Justice Linda Williams. Charges include Theft by Unlawful Taking, Receiving Stolen Property, Tampering with Evidence and Failure to Make Required Disposition of Funds.
The charges stem from an investigation that began on April 27 when cash from two separate court forfeitures was discovered missing. On April 28, Sgt. Senft and three other deputies with access to the evidence room were placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation. Following the discovery of additional missing cash seized as evidence, the investigation was turned over to the District Attorney’s Office.
During an interview on Wednesday May, 3, with his attorney present, Senft confessed to taking over $750.00 from the evidence room. Senft was immediately fired and the other deputies cleared of any wrong doing.
Following arraignment, Senft was released without bail pending an unscheduled preliminary hearing.
Senft was hired on September 1, 1999 by former Sheriff Bill Hose. He was promoted to Corporal on April 22, 2003 and again promoted to Sergeant on March 19, 2004. He continued to serve as Sergeant and Quartermaster under my command until his involuntary separation on May 3, 2016. Senft is also the Treasurer of the York County Lodge 73, Fraternal Order of Police lodge.
Sheriff Richard P. Keuerleber released a statement following Sgt. Senft’s arrest:
“I am deeply disturbed over Senft’s actions and for his breach of trust. I very much regret to report these events to the public. There is absolutely no indication that any other person was involved in these matters. I wish to reassure the public that our internal policies and procedures supported the quick identification and we are taking continual corrective steps to ensure that this does not ever happen again.
Please do not allow the dishonest betrayal of one of my former deputies to overshadow the professionalism and integrity of all who continue to serve the people of York County honorably and faithfully each and every day.”
