Harrisburg, PA – Work begins on Sunday night for a $13.2-million repair and resurfacing project for nearly 7 miles of Route 322 between the Eisenhower Interchange in Swatara Township and the Hershey interchange with Route 39 and Route 422 in Derry Township.
Nearly 21,000 vehicles travel this portion of Route 322 on a daily basis. Also included in the project is a little more than 1-1/2 miles of Route 422 between the Hershey interchange with Route 322 and North Orchard Road in Derry Township.
This work will be conducted during the overnight hours, between 9 PM and 6 AM.
During the overnight hours, motorists may encounter single-lane traffic restrictions. The initial work getting underway on Sunday night starts just east of Mushroom Hill Road and will progress east toward the project’s eastern limit at North Orchard Road. When that is eventually completed, the work change to the westbound. Motorists are asked to be alert to these nighttime operations, to obey work zone signs, and to slow down when approaching and driving through the work zones – for their safety as well as for the safety of the work crews.
During the course of the project, it will also be necessary to close ramps overnight in the Hershey interchange with Route 322, Route 422 and Route 39 and detour traffic while work is underway on the ramps. PennDOT will issue traffic alerts prior to the ramps closures.
PennDOT has contracted with Hempt Bros., Inc. of Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, to conduct the repair and resurfacing project at a cost of $13,272,886. The project consists of base repair, milling (i.e., the removal of the old asphalt surface), and resurfacing the existing roadway and shoulders with new asphalt.
On the concrete portions of the project, the contractor will make concrete repairs and apply a thin friction course on the pavement. The project also includes guide rail replacement, minor drainage improvements, and curb ramp improvements associated with the Americans for Disabilities Act (ADA). The overall project is scheduled for completion by mid-July of next year (2017).
