SANFORD, Fla.– The pistol that George Zimmerman used in the notorious fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin is now being put up for auction online.
Zimmerman said that he was defending himself when he shot and killed Martin, who was an unarmed, black 17-year-old. The incident sparked protests and a nationwide debate about race relations.
In an interview with WOFL, a station in Florida, Zimmerman said that he had just gotten the pistol back from the U.S. Justice Department, according to FOX61. It was taken after Zimmerman was acquitted in the 2012 shooting death of Martin.
Zimmerman said that “it’s time to move past the firearm” and that is why he is selling the gun.
The listing for the auction can be found on Gunbroker.com and lists the gun as a 9mm Kel-Tec PF-9 pistol. The auction will open at 11 a.m. on Thursday, and the bidding will begin at $5,000.
