YORK COUNTY – Lancaster and York are used to facing each other in War of the Roses competitions. On Saturday, May 14th, ninth graders from the two counties will go head to head in the Grammar Bowl. High school freshmen are improving their grammar skills while competing one on one for prizes like Ipads. The overall winner earns a vacation for four to Disney World.
The contest is a way to introduce the students and area teachers to the Egumpp online grammar program.

“What we feel is if we can have students learn grammar and at the same time, have fun and win great prizes, you couldn’t beat it,” said Egumpp Creator Bob Safran.

Organizers began recruiting ninth graders in York and Lancaster counties, urging local teachers to let students know they can sharpen grammar skills while competing for cool stuff.

"My teacher encouraged some of us specifically to take the test and get involved in the competition because we were really good at grammar," explained Dallastown High Freshman Emily White. "So she kind of like shepherded me into it, she was kinda like, you can do this, you can do this."

Courtney Smith of Dover feels the contest and online lessons will help her land a job in the future. "I want to be in the writing and publishing field so grammar of course will help with that," she added. "Employers will look for good grammar and if you don't have it, you're not going to get hired."

The Grammar Bowl finals are at Central York Middle School. Doors open at 9am and a champion will be crowned by 11:30am. Admission is free and the event is open to the public.
