SPRINGETTSBURY TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Some local students put their good grammar skills to the test on Saturday.

Ninth graders from schools in York and Lancaster counties passed a rigorous qualification process to advance to the E-Gump Grammar Bowl Finals at Central York Middle School. Twenty-seven finalists went head to head in a display of their grammar knowledge.

Organizers say the contest is a special opportunity for students.

"It gives non-athletic types, more of the scholarly types, an opportunity to shine," Central York Middle School teacher Brian Shoff said. "For them it's very exciting, They enjoy the opportunity to actually get one stage and be recognized for academics as opposed to athletics."

The winner of the Grammar Bowl was Kristen Mast who is a freshman at Lampeter-Strasburg High School in Lancaster County. She won a trip to Disney World.

FOX43 Sports Director Todd Sadowski served as the emcee of the Grammar Bowl.
