GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Reporter Doug Reardon was covering sightings of a black bear in Grand Rapids for WXMI when the animal made a surprise appearance.

The reporter had been told by officers that the bear was probably long gone, but when Reardon set up his live shot for the 6 news on Monday -low and behold the bear came out.

DNR wildlife biologist Nick Kalejs told Reardon it's not uncommon to see bears in heavily populated areas, and they're usually harmless.

It's still recommended to steer clear of any wild animal, and call the proper authorities.

This bear is believed to have recently left its mother.
