YORK, PA–  A man in York County who admitted to beating a dog last year was sentenced this afternoon.

Luis Cruz-Padro received 2  years of intermediate punishment-avoiding jail time in this case.

Cruz will spend the first 2 months under monitored house arrest and the remainder of that sentence under probation.

The revelation in court today was that Cruz claimed the reason why he abused the dog, Bugz, in the video was because the dog was becoming increasingly volatile and jumped on Cruz’s newborn son.

He pled guilty last month to one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty.

He will pay a $500 file as well as prosecution costs and restitution to the York County SPCA.

The SPCA objected to Judge Michael Bortner’s wish for Cruz to complete 150 hours community service at an animal facility, so an alternative arrangement will be made.

Cruz made a brief statement in court saying, “I never could forgive myself for what I have done.”

Cruz declined to comment through his attorney -who spoke to FOX43 after the sentencing.

Attorney David Erhard said, “I think if you look at the history of the way this case has unfolded, there’s evidence that he really did come in here ready to take accountability for what he did and if you believe his statement was genuine, then that’s exactly what he said.”

Erhard went on to say that his client was physically assaulted after the video went viral in addition to his family receiving numerous threats online.

But Erhard says Cruz wants to put this all behind him.
