DERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. - A Dauphin County community came together to raise awareness for an incurable disease. Patients with ALS along with their family members, friends, and caregivers gathered for the 2016 Hershey "Walk to Defeat ALS" at Penn State Milton Hershey Medical Center.

It's often called Lou Gehrig's disease, and it causes patients to eventually lose control of all voluntary muscles of the body.

Saturday's event raised money for research and patient service programs for those with ALS.

"The turn out is unbelievable," ALS Greater Philadelphia Chapter Director of Communications Tony Heyl said. "There are so many exciting teams and they're enthusiastic. They really love the care they get from Dr. Simmons and Nurse Sue Walsh, and the team here at Hershey Medical Center. It's really important that they're here because the services that they get are helping them everyday."

Walkers in the event wore t-shirts with personal stories and connections to ALS.
