CARLISLE, Pa. - Memories sketched out in gray-- a late Korean War veteran's artwork is on display in Cumberland County.
John A. Cook's "Sleepless Nights" exhibit opened Friday at the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center in Carlisle. The pencil drawings depict what he saw during the time he served in Korea from 1950 to 1951. After the war, Cook was an educator at Penn State University for 30 years. The purple heart recipient continued his passion as an artist-- instructing students at the university.
The sketches on display in Carlisle served as a means of dealing with his PTSD.
"He would do them in the middle of the night, he called them his midnight drawings because he would wake up with nightmares and things like that and this helped him deal with that grief he was feeling."
The gallery will be open through next Spring.
