The Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act, signed into law under Democratic President Bill Clinton, expired on Sept. 13, 2004.

It was a United States federal law, which defined “semiautomatic assault weapon” to include 19 named firearms and copies of those firearms, as well as certain semi-automatic rifles, pistols and shotguns with at least two specified characteristics from a list of features. The federal ban also prohibited the transfer and possession of any new capacity ammunition magazine, prohibited civilians from manufacture, transfer, or possession of a semiautomatic assault firearms.

Several attempts to renew the ban have gone unsuccessful. Another attempt to reinstate the ban is in motion.

White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett and Vice President Joe Biden will host a mass conference call on Monday asking the general public for support of their efforts to renew the ban.
