NORTH BRADDOCK, PA — Authorities say an 8-year-old boy who was hospitalized with head injuries on Tuesday has died.
Detectives from the Allegheny County Police Department told WPXI that the boy was taken to the hospital on Sunday by a family member, and doctors called police.
WPXI reports that police arrested the boy’s mother’s fiancé, 38-year-old Orlando Williams, late Monday night.
According to a criminal complaint, doctors said the boy was placed on a ventilator and had a brain bleed as well as a herniated brain stem and bruises all over his body.
Williams told police that he stumbled on a laundry basket in the child’s room, and yelled at the boy.
He admitted to police that he has been drinking earlier in the day, and was alone with his fiancé’s three children while she was at work.
Williams grabbed the boy and tried to slam him on his bed but missed, according to the complaint.
The boy was then unresponsive, and taken to the hospital.
Williams is facing charges of aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child and recklessly endangering another person.
WPXI reports that Williams is a tier 3 sex offender, meaning he wasn’t allowed to be around children. County police have yet to say whether Williams will face more charges in the case because of his sex offender status.
