Shots are fired during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights, Minnesota.

Within the past 36 hours, two men were fatally shot by police officers.

Alton Sterling was shot in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, following an altercation with police officers. Police allegedly responded with force when someone said Sterling had a gun in his pocket.

Several hours later, St. Paul, Minnesota police officers shot Philandro Castile during a routine traffic stop. The car he was traveling in had a broken tail light.

Both incidents were recorded on smart phones, which the videos have sparked controversy, as well as outrage across the country.
