WJHL is reporting residents in a Northeast Tennessee Community are in shock after a newspaper carrier was gunned down in the middle of the night.

The shooting happened early Thursday morning in Bristol. Authorities said someone started randomly shooting at drivers.

Josh Devine, Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Public Information Officer, said the officer who was shot was treated at an area hospital and released.

“The TBI, at the request of Second District Attorney General Barry Staubus is working alongside the Bristol, Tennessee Police Department in investigating a series of shooting related crime scenes that resulted in, at this point, one fatality, and four injuries. A Bristol Police Department officer is among the injured. We are working as aggressively, as quickly, and as carefully as possible to gather any and all relevant evidence to determine the exact set of events. Preliminarily, we’ve determined the subject, armed with at least two weapons fired shots at the Days Inn on Volunteer Parkway and several vehicles before being confronted by Bristol, Tennessee Police. During that exchange, the subject fired shots at three responding officers, after which, the officers returned fire, striking the subject, he was injured and taken to Bristol Regional Medical Center, as were the other individuals injured in connection to this incident.”
