HOLTWOOD, Pa. – Residents in several Lancaster County communities can’t stop talking about multiple bear sightings over the last few days.

The last sighting was in Quarryville Tuesday afternoon and a trap has been set to capture the bears.

“You could see him just walking down a dirt road, and he kind of looked at us, sat down for a while, looked right at us for a good couple minutes, got up and walked off,” Brian Andreychek, one of several residents who spotted the bear, said.

It is unknown just where the bears came from, but there have been several sightings throughout Lancaster County in the last few days. One of them rummaged through Guy Pike’s yard over the weekend.

“When he looked at me and I looked at him, I was like dumbfounded,” he said. “I didn’t know what to do, and I didn’t know what he was going to do, so I turned around and I ran to the house.”

Strangely enough, Pike’s wife went away to Mifflin County for the weekend hoping to see some bears up there, unaware that one would show up at her house here.

“You’re up there looking for bears, they’re down here in our driveway and she was just like “No” and I said, ‘You don’t believe me, ask the boy’ and she was tickled,” he said.

Bears are an unusual site around these parts. The people we talked to say they had never seen one up close until now.

“Especially in this area, it’s not uncommon to get deer or so around here, but definitely not a bear,” Andreychek said. “That’s definitely not something that you’d expect to see here. It wasn’t like we were in the middle of nowhere; we’re just off the main road and found a bear right there.”

Although the bears may be cute, wildlife officials in these cases advise people to stay away from bears and to clear any potential food sources from their yards.
