A woman was found dead after severe thunderstorms and flooding lashed parts of Maryland Saturday night.
The woman’s body was found near downtown Ellicott City, which was swamped by flash floods Saturday, according to Howard County Office of Emergency Management Press Secretary Andy Barth. At least two people are still missing, Barth told CNN. Ellicott city is about 12 miles west of Baltimore.
Maryland Governor Larry Hogan has declared a state of emergency in Howard County.
“The thunderstorms caused extensive damage to property and infrastructure in the central part of the state, including intense flooding in the historic town of Ellicott City,” the governor said in a statement. Hogan surveyed the damaged area Sunday morning.
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood emergency Saturday evening for portions of the Baltimore area, and warned people to get to higher ground.
“Do not attempt to travel unless you are fleeing an area subject to flooding or under an evacuation order,” it said.
There were several road closures Saturday night. Howard County’s Department of Fire and Rescue Services said on Facebook Saturday night that it was “responding to numerous swift water vehicle rescues.”
