YORK, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police continue to investigate the shooting death of a York man found alongside Interstate-83.

Shannon Martin was a solid teammate, loving father, and trusted friend.

Those who knew Martin can't understand why this happened to someone who had so much going for him.

The York Generals suffered a loss greater than they've ever experienced on the field.

York Generals owner Javan Matthews said "the family is definitely mourning for this. It's kind of hard. The team is hurting, his mom, his family, is hurting, they just need answers right now. Everybody wants answers, because we don't understand why."

York Generals teammate Bob Moore said "no matter what team we played for, whether it be the Bullets, whether it be the Rhinos, or whether it was the York Generals, he was my ace, anywhere."

Early Friday, August, 12th, Martin was found shot to death along I-83 in York County.

"Shannon changed his life a while ago. I was right there with him. We did it together you might as well say. I know for a fact that he didn't deserve this," Moore said.

Moore remembers not just what he and his best friend tackled on the field, but in the game of life.

"We made some bad choices growing up, living a lifestyle that we're trying to change in the community today. Over the last eight years, football helped us stay away from that," Moore said.

Matthews said Martin's place on the team will never be replaced.

"Remembering the way he acted, and how he made us feel, and that big smile, he would always have at every game," Matthews said.

"There are a lot of people on our team that don't want to see anybody else in number four. I mean, that man deserves that number to be retired," Matthews added.

Moore will wear his best friend's team number one last time. This season will be dedicated to Martin's memory, as the team hopes to take it to the championship.

"I made a lot of promises for football that I didn't keep, whether from championships to really making it. I made a lot of promises. I'm going to make sure this goes through," Moore said.

"It hurts to be honest, to know that we're not going to have him out here with us, but he'll be here. He'll be here. He might not be here in flesh, but he'll definitely be here in spirit," Matthews said.

"It's just crazy bro, it ain't going to be the same out there without him," Moore said.

Martin's teammates hope that someone will come forward to bring justice for their friend and his family.

"Who ever it is, I pray that they come forward and give themselves up," Matthews said.

Martin leaves behind three daughters and a son.
