QUARRYVILLE, Pa.–A Quarryville man plead guilty last month to one count of animal cruelty after authorities say he failed to provide veterinary care for Libre.

Libre, the 4-month-old Boston terrier found emaciated and with severe mange, was rescued from a Lancaster County farm in July.

Benjamin S. Stoltzfus, 33,  entered a guilty plea on Aug. 22 after he was charged with one count of animal cruelty, according to online court documents.  He was fined $904.97.

Investigators say Libre suffered severe physical distress and multiple ailments due to the lack of veterinary care. Stoltzfus failed to provide medical care Libre for approximately one month, according to court documents.

Stoltzfus admitted to police that he purposefully left Libre in a kennel where he believed the dog would die, court records state.

Libre’s case has inspired legislative attempts to beef up cruelty laws in Pennsylvania. Senator Richard Alloway has introduced “Libre’s Law.”

A rally in support of the legislation is planned on Sept. 28 at Noon on the steps of the Capitol Building in Harrisburg.
