MIAMI, Fla.– The Miami Marlins have announced the death of ace right-hand pitcher Jose Fernandez.

The U.S. Coast Guard says 24-year old Fernandez was one of three people killed in a boat crash off Miami Beach early Sunday morning. Investigators say the boat was traveling at a significant speed when it struck rocks. They say Fernandez was killed as a result of the impact of the crash, and did not drown. The three victims were between 24 and 27-years old. He said alcohol is not believed to be a factor and no illicit drugs were found at the scene.

The Marlins did not immediately release details, other than releasing a statement confirming the death of one of the top pitchers in baseball.

The statement reads,  “The Miami Marlins organization is devastated by the tragic loss of José Fernández. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this very difficult time.”

The Marlins’ game on Sunday at home against the Atlanta Braves was cancelled.
