Many Southern and East Coast residents are accustomed to hurricanes, however, Hurricane Matthew has the potential to pack a powerful punch.

Matthew has already caused the evacuation of 1.5 million Floridians, CNN reported. Evacuations have been aired as precautionary from St. Augustine, Florida up to South Carolina.

The National Hurricane Center is projecting hurricane winds of 145-mph making it a Category 4. The last time East Coast residents were forewarned to evacuate was in 2012, when Hurricane Sandy decimated parts of New York City and New Jersey. That storm killed 147 people. Matthew has taken the lives of 10 people in Haiti, where tens of thousands still live in makeshift homes after the earthquake, CNN reported.

The storm killed another four people in the Dominican Republic, too. A total of 28 people at the time of publishing this post have been killed.

Air travel has been affected, forcing 1,500 flights to have been canceled as the storm approaches the southeastern US. That number could rise as the hurricane starts thrashing the coast, CNN reported.
