HARRISBURG, Pa.– The bridge that carries Malleable Road over Route 30 in West Hempfield Township, Lancaster County, was closed to all traffic on Monday, October 10, for a major rehabilitation project. Though Malleable Road is a township road, the bridge is owned and maintained by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. A little more than 1,700 vehicles used this bridge on a daily basis. Traffic is detoured by way of Ironville Pike, Prospect Road, and Route 462.

The bridge closure and detour should continue until mid-December while the contractor repairs the bridge deck and applies a latex overlay to protect and preserve the deck surface. If temperature conditions allow the latex overlay to be accomplished this way, the bridge should reopen in time for the winter season.

In the spring, when temperatures rise after the winter season and are more conducive to painting, the contractor intends to paint the steel portions of the bridge. The painting operation which will help protect and preserve the steel will affect traffic on Route 30. Traffic lane restrictions on Route 30 will be permitted during the overnight hours between 9 PM and 6 AM.

PennDOT has contracted with Kinsley Construction, Inc. of York, Pennsylvania, to conduct the rehabilitation project at a cost of $1,154,076. The four-span bridge over Route 30 was originally built in 1970. The contract completion date for the overall project is early June 2017.
