SOUTHAMPTON TOWNSHIP, Pa.–An elderly Franklin County woman was the victim of what authorities are calling a “granny scam.”

State Police at Chambersburg say the 77-year-old woman from Southampton Township received a phone call from a blocked number on Oct. 19 saying her grandson was being held in an detention center. The caller then told the woman she needed to go to Target and purchase four $1,000 gift cards in order to bail him out.

The woman purchased the gift cards and gave the caller the activation codes over the phone.

State police say the scammer hung up and ceased all contact with the woman.

Anyone with information is asked to call State Police at 717-264-5161.
