PEQUEA VALLEY, Pa. - Officials with the Pequea Valley School District confirm four cases of whooping cough. Three students and an adult have been impacted. The school sent a letter to parents.

The district warns other children may have been exposed to someone with whooping cough, or Pertussis, and the school considers the cases an 'outbreak.'

The letter explains whooping cough is highly contagious and spreads through the air when an infected person sneezes or coughs.

Symptoms of whooping cough start like a cold then develop into a cough.  Symptoms become worse over one to two weeks. At times people can get coughing fits followed by a whooping sound.

The district says the best way to protect yourself or your student is to be sure you are up to date on your shots.

Department of Health vaccine requirements.
