Norfolk Southern train derails near Marysville

MARYSVILLE, PERRY COUNTY– UPDATE: The Marysville ‘subway’ tunnel is reopened to traffic.

A Norfolk Southern intermodal train derailed in Marysville early Monday morning.

It happened around 6:11 a.m., according to  to Norfolk Southern spokesman Dave Pidgeon. The westbound train was coming from Harrisburg when four rear cars derailed as it was traveling over the Rockvale Bridge, Pidgeon said.

It took a while for the train –which is over 8,000 feet long– to come to a stop just north of Marysville.

The derailed cars knocked over a handrail and loose stones from the tracks spilled onto the roadway underneath the Marysville ‘subway’ tunnel.

The tunnel remains closed as crews work to clean up the debris. It is unknown how long the rail line will be down, Pidgeon said.

Investigators are still looking into what caused the derailment.

No one was hurt.
