HARRISBURG, Pa. -- It's officially the holiday travel season in Central Pennsylvania. That means hundreds of thousands of people will be driving and taking the train to get to their destination.

Craig Schulz with Amtrak said, "This is our Super Bowl basically. I mean this is the busiest week of the year for us here at Amtrak. We'll carry about 750,000 people across the country during the holiday period here."

With nearly a million people taking trains to see family and friends for Thanksgiving, Amtrak officials in Lancaster County are bracing for the impact of a large number of travelers.

"We have all hands on deck, you know our customer service agents, everybody's ready to go. We're running extra trains, adding capacity, more seats," Schulz said.

And AAA predicts Pennsylvania roadways also will be busy with more than 1.3 million people driving their cars. PennDOT officials warn drivers to be prepared for traffic delays, especially on I-81 in Schuylkill County, where there's construction.

Michael Crochunis with PennDOT said, "It'll be some significant backlog. I know even just on a regular Friday there's between a five and eight minute delay there. But with increased travel there's pretty significant backlogs."

Both sides of the interstate there are reduced to one lane. But that's not the only thing drivers should pay attention to while on the roads.

"But the wind is hopefully dying down and we don't have as many- as much debris blowing around and downed trees and powerlines and things like that. I mean it'll be nice to sort of not have to deal with that," Crochunis said.

Because no one wants to be late for Thanksgiving dinner.

Schulz said, "So leave extra time, familiarize yourself with the station. But enjoy yourself."
